Properties and Function of Herbicide – 2, 4-D

2, 4-D (Di – Chlorophcnoxy acetic acid)

Commercial Forms:

1. 2, 4 D acids
2. Sodium salts
3. Amine salts
4. Esters
5. Mixtures     
6. Dusts.

Characteristics of 2, 4-D:

i) It is white crystalline material (acid)
ii) Slightly soluble in water
iii) Insoluble in petroleum oils such as kerosene and fuel oils.
iv) Relatively non-corrosive to metals.
v) Non explosive and fire resistant.
vi) Cheap as compared to other herbicides.
vii)  Does not seriously reduce the total number of soil micro-organisms.
viii) Non toxic to human beings and animals in ordinary uses.

It is a selective translocated herbicide and is mostly used for weed control.  It kills broad leaved weeds (dicot weeds) but does not kill plants of grass family (monocots).  The recommended dose is 1.25 to 2 kg a.i. /ha as pre emergence spray and 1.25 kg a.i./ha as post emergence spray.  Mainly post emergence and pre-emergence.
