Area and Production of Arecanut

Arecanut is essentially a tropical crop. Its cultivation is confined to India, Bangladesh, Srilanka, Malayasia and to leasser extent in West Indies and Burma. India is the largest producnig country having an 2.1 lakh ha. area with 2.5 lakh tons production. Kerala (y2.9 thousand ha), Karnataka (46.5 thousand ha) and Assam (31.2 thousand ha)j are the leading states in cultivation of this crop, and constitute about 90% of total acerage under this crop.

In Maharashtra, area under arecanut is 2800 ha with production of 3500 to 4000 tonns. It is mainly cultivated in the districts of Ratnagiri and Raigad.
