Cultivars or Varieties of Cabbage
Cabbage cultivars are classified on the basis of colour of head and maturity. In India white cabbage is important these cabbage are available in pointed, round and flat shapers", of these found cabbages are preferred. Common cabbage varieties grown along with the characteristics are as below.
Early varieties:
Golden Acre:
It has compact and round head, plant is’ small and compact with few outer leaves with short stem. Interior position of head is white. Average weight of head is 1 to 2 kg. It is ready for harvest in 70-80 days in proper season.
Pride of India:
It is one week late than Golden Acre. Head weight is 1 to 2 kg.
Copenhagen Market:
It is late by one week than Pride of India. Ready for harvest in 90-100 days and head weighs 1.5 to 3.00 kg. Head is compact.
Late Varieties:
In late varieties flat shaped head varieties are grown Pusa Drumhead It is a late selection. Heads are large flat and some what loose. Average head weight is 1.5 to 3 kg. It is heavy yielder.
Hybrid Cultivars:
Hybrid cultivars are introduced which are more uniform in maturity, size and shape of head than common cultivars. Hybrid cultivars can be grown a higher temperature. Hari rani is one of the best hybrids. Now a day’s cabbage is grown in different seasons. It has become possible because of hybrid cultivars which can tolerate high temperature. Various Private seed companies are marketing different hybrids viz. Kaveri, Hardam Nakshatra etc.
