Climate and Soil:
Clocimttm is a hardy plant, fee from any serious diseases arid pests. It can be easily be grown in all tropical and sub tropical regions of India haying an average rainfall of & 5-130 cm well distributed throughout the year. The minimum temperature should not however, go below zero. The carp can be grown in varied types of soils ranging from sandy loam to clay loam with normal soil nutrition and requires rio heavy fertilization.
Preparation of Land:
The land should be prepared to good tilth by ploughing, harrowing and properly leveled after application of compost or farm yard manure. The land should be divided into manageable beds for proper irrigation.
It is propagated through seed. The seed rate is 200-2501 gm per acre (500- 600g/ha).
Time of Sowing:
February to the middle of March is the appropriate time of sowing. Seedlings are raised in nursery beds and then 2 months old seedlings are transplanted at a spacing of 60 x 60 cm2 (spacing within and between rows).
The first irrigation should be given immediately after transplanting. Later as and when required irrigation should be provided. Too much water logging should be avoided. Less irrigation is required from’2nd year onwards.
After applying a basal dose of 10 kg N per acre at the time of transplanting, a dose of 0 kg N + 10 kg P + 10 kg K per acre should be applied at the growing stage or after every harvest." Generally 50 kg N + 25 kg P205 + 25 kg K20 is recommended after every harvest.
The whole herb is harvested leaving 6 inches to 10 inches of the basal portion. First harvest is ready in June, second in September and third in November. From the second year onwards one can have 4 harvests. Fresh herb is either hydro or steam distilled for obtaining the oil. Since, Clocimum oil has same specific gravity as that of water, special type of receptacles are employed to collect oil.
35- 40 kg oil / acre in the first year and 50 – 70 kg oil / acre from second year onwards depending on the monitoring of the crop and efficiency in distillation. Once planted the crop remains productive for 6 – 7 years.
