Post-Planting Cares of Social Forestry Plantation

Post-Planting Cares of Social Forestry Plantation

After care of plantations necessary to increase survival and success of plantation. Proper after cares reduces mortality of the plantation in the initial stages and further management will increase the production. There are various operations or aftercares to be carried out in plantation.

1. Watering:

It is not practically feasible to social forestry plantation as’ area is huge and irrigation water is not available every year. Watering is most necessary when planting is done late in the mansoon season. If the seedlings are planted at the onset of mansoon there root system will established well with in 4 months of rainy season and they can take water from subsoil layer and such a seedling were established quickly. They do not require any irrigation. In case of sandy or poor rocky soil, watering is essential because this type of soil have low water holding capacity. Actually for social forestry plantation irrigation is very necessary to keep plantation alive. Sometimes watering is done to boost up the seedlings for social forestry plantation, Watering is done at long interval, which in summer, fortnight interval is followed. As compared with the fruit crops the irrigation interval is very long.

2. Weeding:

Necessary to reduce to the compensation of water, nourishment, light. Weeding at initial stages is very necessary to improve the growth of the seedlings of certain species like sag, Shivan, Teak which suffer due to weed growth. In slow growing plant weeding has to be carried out up to initial 3-4 years. Whereas, in slow growing plant 1 to 2 weddings are necessary in year during 1st in August, 2nd in Feb-March. It also depends upon soil type and weed population. Sometimes under certain condition weeding at monthly interval is followed. To control the weed weedicides like 2, 4-D, 2, 4, 5-T, MCPA are used to keep the grasses growth without any effect on broad leaves sp.

3. Soil Working:

Loosening of the soil around the base of the seedling to prevent soil moisture. This operation carried out along with weeding particular when there is long dry spell. At the time of beginning of hot season and normally after monsoon season.

4. Mulching:

Mulching is done at initial 2 to 3 years to prevent the evaporation of soil moisture and to control the soil temperature used for survival purpose.

5. Fire Trenching:

It is necessary to prevent damage from natural fire. It is done to individual plant or to whole plantation. For individual plant belt of 2m diameter around the plant is cleared, absolutely by removing the grass, weed so that fire will not enter in that area. In case of block planting a strip of 4 m width kept clean around the block plantation so that fire will not enter the plantation. It is also called as Fire tracing.

6. Gap Filling:

(Planting Causalities) this operation is done during next season or planting season. New seedlings are planted in-the-same pit on the same place by loosening the soil. It is advisable to use carbaryl powder at the time of planting. In case of dry area about 50% mortality is observed and considering the further mortality close planting is done at initial stages.

7. Cleaning or Singling:

Sometimes 2 seedlings are planted in each pit. In case of copping, numerous shoots arise. Only one copy shoot or seedlings kept in each spot and remaining are removed. If the two seedlings are planted in each pit kept and another is removed. This operation is helpful to quick and better establishment of the plant.

8. Tending:

Operation carried out for the benefit of the forest crop at any stage of their life, between seedlings to mature crop. Tending includes weeding, cleaning, thinning, pruning improvement, feeling, climbers cutting and girdling of unwanted trees. All operations collectively called as Tending.
