Present Status of Fruit Growing
The country well as Maharashtra possess a diversified soil and climatic condition and holds a pride place with regard to production of tropical to temperate fruit with more or less perfection. Southern states having tropical climate grow successfully many tropical fruits like coconut , areca nut, cashewnunt, spices, among while northern states like Kashmir , himachal Pradesh, northern Paris of Punjab and U.P, kulu valley, kumao hills and Nilgiri and Palni hills in south having temperate climate grown successfully many temperate fruits like apple, pear, peaches, plumes etc.
A variety of such tropical fruits are grown in Maharashtra. The area under fruits in Maharashtra in 1986- 87 was 115000 ha having total production of 1901450 tons of 16.48 tons/ ha the area under fruits in Maharashtra of 1989-90 is as under.
