Weed Control in Water Hyacinth and Road Side
Control of Water Hyacinth:
It is a perennial, free floating aquatic wee, fibrous roots weed; fibrous roots hang in water, produced by seeds and root reproduction. Interferes the surface transport in water.
Dredging mechanically and chaining. 2.4-D is effective @ 1-8 kg/ha. Amine and Ester forms @ 1-1.5 kg/ha are commonly used. Spray conc. 0.3%.
Paraquat (1 kg/ha) and Amitrol (3-5 kg/ha) cause quicker sinking of hyacinth. Fenac @ 0.1 kg/ha also used against it. Both mechanical and chemical methods need to be repeated 2 to 3 times.
Road Side Weed Control:
1. Mowing, burning, discing, blading, hand pulling, hoeing, and chemical treatments.
2. Soil sterilization with Sodium chlorate, Sodium arsenate, Boren, Fenuron, Monuren, Diuron, Bromacil, Fenac, TCA and Sinazine.
3. Soil fumigants : Mehtam. DMTT etc.
A mixture of 2.4-D and 2.4-5 T destroy many weed species along telephone and power lines.
Control of prickly pear s(Opuntia ) or Cactus : 2.4,5-T, Silvex and Pichloram 2 kg/ha are possibly used. Biological control is also successfully tried in India.
Control of Lantana Camera:
Biological control has been successfully tried in Hawaii.
0.4% aquaeous spray of mixture of 2.4-D and 2.4,5-T (2:1) in small infestations these herbicides may be applied with stump treatment. The herbicides translocate from buds to lower parts of Lantana and controls it.
Contact herbicides like Dinitrophenol, Pentachlerophenol and Sodium pentachlorophenate have been used for annual weed control and top growth of perennials. Sodium trichloroacetate also alone or in combination with 2.4-D is used. A mixture of aromatic oils of petroleum, polychoroctyle and 10% acid arsenicals give good result in control of top vegetat on and root of weed plants.
